More Than a Battle

This book by Dr. Joe Rigney has been developed from his own freedom journey, personal study, academic research, and pastoral ministry.

It has never been more difficult to flee sexual immorality and pursue holiness. We live in an age of unprecedented access to sexual temptation. Previous generations faced adultery, prostitution, and brothels. But not every person had a brothel in their pocket. Our society’s obsession with sex, coupled with the technologies that make pornography so accessible, make it more challenging than it’s ever been.

The result is that our families, our churches, and our society are being devastated by a pornography epidemic.

In More than a Battle, pastor and author Joe Rigney offers hope for Christian men who are seeking to live with integrity and faithfulness in the face of the sexual temptation around them. Drawing on the Scriptures, his personal experience, and his pastoral counseling, Rigney frames the struggle with lust beneath the banner of Galatians 5:16: “Walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”… – Lifeway

The author recommends viewing victory over porn through three “lenses” (pp. 6,7)-:

  1. Sexual sin as immorality.
  2. Sexual sin as addiction.
  3. Sexual sin as brokenness.

He believes each of these themes is important and should be included in a balanced strategy for victory. He summarizes the relevance of biblical counsel that corresponds to these “lenses” (pp. 9,10):

1. We are called to put to death the deeds of the body by the Spirit (Rom. 8:13) and so we wage war by the Spirit.

2. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (2 Cor. 3:17) because the Spirit is the One who sets us free from the law of sin and death (Rom. 8:2); and so we are set free by the Spirit.

3. In the book of Isaiah, the Spirit is the one who anoints the Messiah to bind up the brokenhearted, to comfort the mourning, and to give them a garment of praise instead of a faint spirit (Isa. 61:1–4), so we are healed by the Spirit.

BRACE: A Holistic Strategy

One of the techniques recommended to help escape the snare of porn is B.R.A.C.E.
This strategy is included in the Freedom Fight program. The initial step, “combat breathing,” has been practiced by Navy SEALs. Here is a summary of what BRACE stands for:

  • Breathe Deeply: Taking deep, diaphragmatic breaths, like combat breathing used by Navy SEALs, helps supply more oxygen to the prefrontal cortex and improves decision-making and control over impulsive behaviors.
  • Remember the Truth: This step involves recalling the teachings of God and one’s identity in Him. Remembering truth re-engages the prefrontal cortex (PFC), stimulating higher reasoning based on morals, values, and consequences.
  • Ask for God’s Help: Knowing God’s promises is not enough; they must be believed to influence behavior. Therefore, in the face of difficulty, asking God to help you believe the truth you are meditating on is crucial [prayer].
  • Call an Accountability Partner: Breaking isolation and engaging with someone trustworthy during temptation is crucial.
  • Escape Temptation: The final step is to flee temptation, which means getting out of isolation and indulging in healthy activities. Recognizing your temptation and running from it is vital in quitting porn. “Flee sexual immorality”… 1 Cor. 6:18 [1]

Observe that these steps are sequential; there is a logic that “escape” is mobilized by the preceding principles.

Also, this technique corresponds to four aspects of biblical psychology: the physical, psychological, spiritual and social dimensions of human life.

Breathe Deeply: body
Remember the Truth: soul (mind)
Ask for God’s Help: spirit
Call an Accountability Partner: social
Escape Temptation

Spirit, soul, body aspects of freedom are affirmed here: “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it” (1 Thess. 5:23,24).

The social aspect of freedom is included in the preceding context “Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all” (1 Thess. 5:14).

These aspects are illustrated in this wheel diagram.[2]

As in 1 Thessalonians 5:24, God’s faithfulness is included in a key BRACE promise: No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Cor. 10:13).

The ability to Escape is not self effort, but the motivation and power of the Holy Spirit Who indwells every believer (1 Cor. 6:19; Eph. 5:18).

May we, like Navy SEALs, fight the good fight of faith, using a holistic strategy for victory.

Freedom Counsel

Freedom Counsel

Proverbs is a handbook for timeless wisdom. Many have used the method of reading a chapter for each day of the month.

Consider freedom insights in this chapter 23. Consider these excerpts and added comments.

“… Consider carefully what is before you;
And put a knife to your throat
If you are a man given to appetite.” Prov. 231b,2a

When needed, exercise bold self control!

“My son, if your heart is wise,
My heart will rejoice—indeed, I myself;
Yes, my inmost being will rejoice
When your lips speak right things.” Prov. 23:15,16

When you apply wisdom to your life, you also give joy to your parents and spiritual leaders.

“Hear, my son, and be wise;
And guide your heart in the way.
Do not mix with winebibbers,
Or with gluttonous eaters of meat;
For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty,
And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags…Buy the truth, and do not sell it,
Also wisdom and instruction and understanding.” Prov. 23:19,20,21,23

It is wise to abstain from company of those in a sensuous lifestyle (inclusing imaginary association by viewing videos), which leads to losses.

“My son, give me your heart,
And let your eyes observe my ways.
For a harlot is a deep pit,
And a seductress is a narrow well.
She also lies in wait as for a victim,
And increases the unfaithful among men.” Prov. 23:26-28

The way of wisdom is to turn your heart to the Lord and what is good. Pornography (which is a form of prostitution) leads to enslaving habits, like being stuck in a deep pit or stuck upside down in a narrow well!

“Who has woe?
Who has sorrow?
Who has contentions?
Who has complaints?
Who has wounds without cause?
Who has redness of eyes?
Those who linger long at the wine,
Those who go in search of mixed wine.
Do not look on the wine when it is red,
When it sparkles in the cup,
When it swirls around smoothly;
At the last it bites like a serpent,
And stings like a viper.
Your eyes will see strange things,
And your heart will utter perverse things.
Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the [h]midst of the sea,
Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying:
‘They have struck me, but I was not hurt;
They have beaten me, but I did not feel it.
When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?’” Prov. 23:29-35

Being “under the influence” of alcohol, or dopamine (a pleasure hormone released in the brain from the superstimulation of porn) leads to sorrow, injuries, and senseless addiction.

For a contemporary summary of ten harmful effects of porn (from a secular agency), see

Let’s heed this biblical and contemporary freedom counsel as we pray, “…deliver us from evil.”

The Woman Caught in Adultery

Our Savior can empathize with us in our weakness, including when we struggle with temptations to lust and sexual immorality. “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Heb. 4:15). Christ also helps by the indwelling Holy Spirit. He fulfilled this promise: “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever” (John 14:16).

The episode of the woman caught in the act of adultery not only exposes how a person can be ensnared, but also show us how Jesus responded. The context indicates that the religious leaders sought an opportunity to accuse Him of being too strict or too permissive.

“Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more” (John 8:2-11).

Notice these transferable actions:

  1. Jesus distracted His eyes (and mercifully shifted the attention of others off the accused woman).
  2. He engaged with Scripture. (Whatever Jesus wrote on the ground was true.)
  3. He paused and prayed. (Since prayer was a continual pattern, this would be implied here. Luke 3:21; 9:18,28,29; 22:32,41,44.)
  4. He responded with righteousness, mercy and wisdom. (“Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”)

Whether male or female, adultery in the heart and actions is a temptation and snare. However, our Savior’s example instructs us, His blood cleanses us, and His Holy Spirit enables us.

We confess with the Psalmist: “My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for He will pluck my feet out of the net” (Psalm 25:15).

A Lesson on Sexual Sanity

With the development of digital photography, high speed Internet, and “smart” phones, we may think that our modern culture has a much harder time avoiding lust and sexual immorality. But the nature of sensual temptation and God’s directives for His design for the sexual aspect of life are unchanged.

Consider this brief exposition of biblical counsel in Thessalonians 4:1-8 (NET version).

Take discipleship seriously.

1. Discern God’s will: Abstain from sexual immorality.

-Control your physical vessel.

-Sexual behavior should be holy and honorable.

-Sexual behavior should not be like the sensually dominated unsaved.

2. Do not hurt others; be advised:

-God holds everyone accountable for their sins.

-God has called us to a life of holiness and moral purity.

-God gives us His Holy Spirit to instruct and empower believers.

3. Don’t disregard divine wisdom

Dr. Tony Evans commented on this passage: “Paul knows that believers need to be sanctified in a lot of areas, but he starts with the topic of sex on purpose. He knows that if Jesus can help us to win in this matter, we can win in any other. Indeed, if Jesus helps us to walk away from pornography or to stop sleeping around, then he’s really the Master of our lives. When we believers succumb to sexual strongholds, we are worshiping the wrong thing. We are proving that we are like the unsaved Gentiles, who don’t know God. Sexual immorality is a fruit of an idolatrous root—of the worship of pleasure over God, something that should not be true of believers who possess the Spirit. One of the most attractive lies about sexual immorality is that we can get away with the thrill and not experience negative consequences. But the Lord is an avenger of all these offenses. He sees what we are doing, even if no one else does. Though we do not stay pure to earn God’s love, we are to stay pure because God loves us.” (CSB Tony Evans Study Bible)

May we grow in faith, love and hope (1 Thess. 1:3) and live according to sexual sanity, for God’s glory and our good.

Replacing Lies with Truth: A Testimony

A Christian leader has written an important article in which he opens up about the lies he believed that led to a pornography habit. Thankfully, he found freedom in Christ for sexual sobriety. He writes,

“Internet pornography use is ubiquitous. The metric you use to support that statement doesn’t seem to matter: percent of internet users who consume it, number of bits of data flowing through the Internet, or even cash currency. It is a huge business. And the internet distributes pornography at levels historically unprecedented. It quickly became easy to access, cheap to acquire, and anonymous to consume.

“I am myself no stranger to the consumption of internet pornography. To be clear, consuming pornographic material is not appropriate for a believer in Jesus Christ. Our website has more information on this. But I don’t think that principle needs repeating; my older brothers in the faith have been very clear about that.

“In this article I want to share with you some insights the Lord has taught me through my struggle to be free of an addiction to internet pornography. I will be frank. And rather than condemning you for your sin (the enemy does a plenty good job at that), I will address a number of beliefs you may find you hold, even if unwittingly. Then you’ll see how those beliefs do not reflect reality—they are all a lie.”

This article is insightful about the lies that promote the poison of porn. The antidote is a deeper appropriation of truth.

“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘if you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.’ … ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed'” (John 8:31,32,34-36 NKJV).

The article has additional persuasiveness due to the author’s first hand experience and testimony. It is summarized this way:

Danger: Poison

The Enemy of our soul has many devices. Therefore, we need to have discernment …” to keep Satan from taking advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his schemes” (2 Cor. 2:11).

You may have experienced this downward regression: an

  • Impulsive act, leading to
  • Compulsive activity, leading to
  • Addictive behavior, leading to
  • Destructive consequences.

The following testimony from Pure Life Ministries describes the tragic consequences of pornographic habits, but also testifies of the liberating power of God’s provision in Jesus Christ.

The Poison of Pornography
By Tom Blangiardo

My first exposure to pornography came as a defenseless child, less than 10 years old. I innocently rode my two-wheeler down to the neighborhood candy store where I always spent my weekly allowance, and there it was. It was in the early years of Playboy magazine leading the way for a whole new genre of “adult entertainment,” and the magazine was prominently positioned.

Something went into me that day that I could not shake. I came back a day later, and rifled through the pages, filled with both shame and overwhelming excitement. The images were indelibly implanted in my mind. Like Adam and Eve, a whole new world opened up to me. Little did I know that I had been bitten by a vicious serpent, and its deadly venom had entered my soul.

Although this poison is not deadly in one dose, the serpent is relentless. By his repeated and progressive attacks, the serpent’s victim becomes increasingly unable to resist. Satan is a patient predator. He studies and understands his victim. He doesn’t present his corrupted view of reality all at once, but rather step by step, lie by lie, as he sees the target ready to accept the next dose…

Sexual Wholeness Articles

Author and counselor Steve Prokopchak, has posted two strategic articles: “Sexual Wholeness: Addressing Pornography,” parts 1 & 2. He is a leader and equipper with Dove Christian Fellowship International, based in Pennsylvania. The article lays out the issues clearly from the start:

“Let us establish from the beginning that when we look at pornography we are engaging in sexual immorality and dishonoring God’s design for intimacy within the confines of marriage: one man with one woman. Most importantly, pornography will never take us where God ultimately desires to take us in our walk with Him.” The article includes these headings:

  • Statistics and the Issue of Pornography
  • A Brief History of Porn
  • Statistics and the Pornhub Website
  • The Conditioning Process [5 steps down]
  • How the Brain Undergoes Change
  • How Does This [brain habituation] Actually Work?
  • Escalation of Pornography Use
  • Teenagers and Porn
  • Porn Warps Our Ideas about Sex
  • Porn Is Killing Marriages: Here’s How
  • What Happens in the Soul Realm with Porn Use?
  • Pornographers’ Dark Secrets
  • What Does This Mean for Us?
  • “But I’m Not Addicted!”
  • Answers Are Available

The author concludes with offering hope:

“As discouraging and disgusting as all this may sound, we know that it is possible to break free from addiction to pornography. We need to give hope and tell people that there is a path to change and freedom. There is no sin that Jesus did not die for. Our spirit and our minds need to be cleansed by the blood that our Savior shed on the cross. Freedom is available.”

1 Corinthians 10:13 provides this promise: “No temptation [regardless of its source] has overtaken or enticed you that is not common to human experience [nor is any temptation unusual or beyond human resistance]; but God is faithful [to His word—He is compassionate and trustworthy], and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability [to resist], but along with the temptation He [has in the past and is now and] will [always] provide the way out as well, so that you will be able to endure it [without yielding, and will overcome temptation with joy].” – Amplified Bible translation

The second article presents a biblical solution for dealing with pornography and walking in sexual wholeness.
